vice and the vision machine [30 Dec 2009|09:48am]

[ music | office work :/ ]

two monumental things have gone down in the past week

1. i can legitimately use the quarter life crisis excuse since im legally 25 now. although, i still look nothing short of a jail bait 17 years old. the only gifts i received consisted of a bottle of jack and some pot. good lord! this is what my life has been reduced to in between the the monotony of the 9-5 coal mine gig. UGH. I need out, which is why i went out and bought my GRE study guide material the very next day in an effort to thwart any nascent crisis crap.

2. watched avatar, in imax3d. such a visually arresting film, a statement that i reserve both as a compliment and a critique. the fact that it was a stunning ocular treat is incontestable. maybe it's due to the fact that i tend to shift, toss and turn a lot while im in the theatre but i felt as though my body was relegated to a singular position with this 3d stuff, which i obviously didnt enjoy. anytime i tilted my head, repositioned my body in any way that wasnt upright, the image became blurry through the glasses (well not so much blurry as much as the two transposed images became apparent). its like the fictional environment around you is expanded and redefined, but your own personal space/experience is, quite conversely, locked in place and confined. i guess that's the paradox of this new technology. one last thing: worthington's terrible american accent alone should've made cameron reconsider any dialogue he was offered...should've just taken off his shirt over and over again.

cant wait for new year's eve. have a half dozen friends or so i havent seen in ages in town and im gearing for a great night!

merry late xmas y'all

12 favorite movies, 2000-2009
a highly subjective (and probably incomplete) list

12. Me and You and Everyone We Know
2005, dir. Miranda July

This movie had a little bit of everything: It had moments of art and beauty, moments of surreal innocence (how else to describe ))<>(( as a concept?) and deeply adult pain. It also had a love story between a man and a woman, but the real love story in this film, to me, was the one that developed between the characters and the world they lived in. The art of survival and communication, if you will. And none of it comes off as cheesy or forced to me. The hesitation, desperation, longing -- it's all made accessible. Whenever I rewatch it, I find empathy with different characters, and sometimes it's the adults, sometimes it's the children, it can even be the freaking goldfish. I love and appreciate that Me and You lets me change my mind each time around, look at things from a different vantage point.

#11 --> #1 )

Conclusions: 2001, 2003 and 2004 were superb years. 2005 and 2007, not so much. And 2006 sucked for American films. I mean, Crash won the fucking Best Picture award. REALLY??

BAY POINT FOR A WEEK: [24 Dec 2009|03:03pm]

[ music | naked in the city again - hot hot heat ]

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE MOST DEPRESSING AIRPORT EXPERIENCE EVER™.

11:30am: Arrive at Midway. Casually glance at the departures board. WHAT IS THIS. 80% OF THE FLIGHTS TODAY ARE CANCELLED. Rush into the re-ticketing line. Call A-T and bitch.

12pm: All they have is stand-by, FML FML FML. And the weather is supposed to get worse, so I wasn't going to reschedule for the next morning because I might as well go home and unpack. I'm like, WHATEVER JUST GET ME OUT OF HERE to the ticket lady.

1pm: Straggle into the gate area. I love the McDonalds at Midway, except they always forget the stupid ketchup packets.

1:30pm: Thank god I packed like 2348 books. Get halfway through Story of a Marriage (I want to be Andrew Sean Greer's faghag. It's pretty embarrassing.)

2pm: IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT! THE ENTIRE AIRPORT IS SHUTTING DOWN! WE DON'T KNOW WHEN IT'LL REOPEN! DON'T PANIC!

2:30pm: Airport is back open. Fall asleep from relief/boredom with fries in my mouth, clutching my luggage.

4:30pm: Wake up, find out next flight to S.F. is delayed.

4:35pm: Hey everyone, 6pm flight to S.F. is now boarding at a gate on the other side of the terminal! But stand-bys should stay here!

4:36pm: Never mind! Stand-bys should go to the new terminal!

6pm: No room on this flight. Rush to the next terminal.

6:10pm: Oh 'sup. Run into M from Doc on his way to Columbus. He gives me the rest of his Superdawg fries. This is the only awesome part of my day.

8:15pm: M from Doc boards his flight. Next plane to S.F. delayed by two and a half hours! I contemplate slitting my wrists in the bathroom. At least the Southwest ladies know my face now. They seem sympathetic. Perhaps not sympathetic enough to let me fly with the cargo.

9:50pm: HOLY SHIT I AM THE LAST STAND-BY NAME CALLED FOR THIS FLIGHT. I AM SO HAPPY I FORGET TO CALL MY MOTHER TO TELL HER I'M GOING HOME THAT NIGHT.

1am: Land at SFO. We're the last flight in for the night; this place is deserted. No BART this time of night. Door-to-door vans won't drive to the East Bay. Finally this Asian charter van driver is like, normally we would charge you $125 AND YOUR FIRSTBORN for this, but I'll drive you out to Walnut Creek for $75 plus $4 bridge fare, you can keep your babies. I'd like to think I got the Asian Student Holiday discount. Booyah.

So I forgot how beautiful the Bay Area is at night. Even Oakland has it's lit-up waterfront. Home. :(

2am: Mother picks me up at the WC BART station. She gives the driver exactly $80. I almost feel bad, BUT IT'S 80 FUCKING DOLLARS.

The worst part about this ordeal? I didn't even want to go home for Christmas, but my mother was all, I'll pay for your ticket! And I'll make up the difference in your paycheck! Blinded by my love of money again, fffffffff.

Oh, dude, I found some of my old CDs in the garage. been listening to Hot Fuzz, Room on Fire, and Tell All Your Friends (ROFL) all afternoon, if only I could find White Pony. Does anyone remember a time when I was obsessed with this song?

Yeah, I don't either.
